  • Good value for money, let down by a few sub-standard components and problems in assembly, 14 June 2013
    review by Richard Stevens
    Rowlinson Gainsborough Gazebo
Like the two previous reviewers, I consider this product to be good value for money overall, but encountered problems with a few components that detract from the overall rating.

Quite a few parts were warped on delivery. With most of them it doesn't matter too much as they are more or less straightened out when screwed into place, but a badly warped roof member is a real problem. This just could not be made to sit correctly against the central post, and has ended up wedged tightly against its right-hand neighbour at the bottom and its left-hand neighbour at the top, with unsightly gaps in between, both from inside and outside. I have disguised the external gaps with a piece of self-adhesive flashing, suitably painted, and will cover the internal gaps with the larger of the two hexagons (I suspect this should actually go in the floor, but the instructions do not specify which hexagon goes where). Other problem pieces were the central post, which was poorly machined on one of the sloping faces, and one of the corner finials, which was probably cut from the same timber as the warped roof member because it was similarly split and warped and had to be planed and filled before painting.

To cap it all, I discovered just the evening before starting assembly that I had been supplied with completely the wrong pack of screws for this product. For example, I had no 60mm screws when I should have had 106, but I had nearly 300 50mm screws which are not even mentioned in the instructions! The company were extremely apologetic and helpful when I phoned the next morning, and had the correct screws sent to me within 24 hours - but ironically, when I started to fix the roof panels with the newly delivered 60mm screws as per the instructions, they came through the roof panel ledges (i.e. through the ceiling, viewed from inside), so I ended up using 50mm screws for this part of the assembly anyway. Even these proved too long unless I screwed them through the overlap of the roof slats rather than through their centre as suggested by the assembly diagram. I don't know whether the company have reduced the thickness of the roof slats and forgotten to reduce the length of the screws to compensate, but something is not right here.

Like the first reviewer, I have noticed gaps between the roof slats, but only after a week or so of hot and dry weather. I think this is probably just natural movement of the wood in response to climatic conditions, and now that the weather has turned wetter and cooler the gaps seem to be closing up. The wetter weather has enabled me to test the effectiveness of Mike Mertens's waterproofing tips, which I adopted in their entirety, and they seem to have worked very well. Leaks are minimal, a couple through the roof panels (though not where I can see the gaps) and one through the central pillar, which a touch more silicone should fix.

Despite the problems encountered during assembly, the finished product looks extremely good, has a good solid feel to it, and is much admired. It would just have been nice to have got to this point with a little less aggravation.
  • Excellent value and great service from Jack's Garden Store and the delivery company, 2 October 2012
    review by Mike Mertens
    Rowlinson Gainsborough Gazebo
I bought this gazebo a while back with the intention of storing it to dry it out thoroughly and then painting it. I have to say it was well worth the effort. First of all let me say that the service from Jack's Garden Store and the delivery company were both excellent - the delivery company in particular could not have been more helpful and friendly.

The gazebo is of very high quality considering the price - I was very impressed by the size and quality of the timber parts. I painted it with 2 coats of Cuprinol Garden Shades - this is a superb product - but be aware that painting all of these parts takes a very long time indeed! Assembly was fairly straight forwards, although getting all of the roof members to line up is quite a challenge (at least a 2 man job). I spent some time laying out the base very accurately and it was worth doing this as all of the parts were accurately cut and went together very well (a small error at layout would no-doubt cause great difficulties getting all the parts to fit later - the first 5 parts of the hexagon will fit but the last one will not!).

Re the comment about the roof not being waterproof - this is the case if the gazebo is built exactly as described, however with a bit of thought, some self-adhesive flashing and some sealant I was able to make the roof fully waterproof. There were also a few items that benefited from being "adjusted" prior to assembly but again these were easy to fix and it was obvious where these changes needed to be made.

I would not hesitate to recommend this product and the flexibility of the panel arrangement is a massive bonus! For a perfect job you need a few extra DIY skills and a bit of time and thought before rushing into assembly.
  • Pretty good value - but would be even better if roof was designed to be waterproof., 4 April 2012
    review by Mike Johnstone
    Rowlinson Gainsborough Gazebo
Well packaged, relatively easy to assemble, looks good but disappointing that the roof isn't waterproof, and in some parts, the roof sections don't even overlap, so you can see daylight through the gaps from within.

Jack says: "We've spoken to the manufacturer about this, and we are awaiting their response."
